Ever wondered what would happen if France made a Hallmark Movie? If so, Jane Austen Wrecked My Life is the film for you! Our heroine, Agathe (Camille Rutherford), is a beautiful woman who works in a bookstore, aspires to be a writer, and adores Jane Austen. Agathe abhors modern dating norms, eschewing apps and declaring, “I was born in the wrong century!”
When we meet her, Agathe is inexplicably unlucky in love, but all that changes about twenty minutes later – by which time, she is already in a love triangle with her endearing best friend and a sexy English literature professor.
The inciting force occurs when Agathe attends an English writers’ retreat run by the descendants of Jane Austen herself. Suddenly, aspiring writer and lover Agathe must reckon with her imposter syndrome and decide if she wants her daydreams of epic romance and a career as a writer to stay in the realm of fantasy or if she has what it takes to take risks.
As far as slight but sweet romantic comedies go, this one will satisfy your cravings. It’s not going to change your world view when it comes to love, but you may enjoy watching an elegant French woman whimsically dance around a bookstore. You may also appreciate the spectacle of a room full of modern Jane Austen lovers dressed up like they’re at a Regency Era ball. And because it’s a FRENCH romcom, it even has female nudity!
