Imagine you’re a respectable, accomplished woman who made one mistake so severe, it could ruin your life. Well, it could ruin your life if it ever got out, unless it stays hidden somehow… This is the scenario explored in Disclaimer, the upcoming Apple+ drama starring Cate Blanchett as Catherine, an acclaimed documentary filmmaker whose life is turned upside down when a manuscript shows up at her home that proves someone knows the worst thing she has ever done.
Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, Disclaimer is equal parts glossy and creepy. While it is ostensibly a mystery about what Catherine did wrong, it is also a series about solving the mystery of who Catherine is. Is she the progressive filmmaker who wins prestigious industry awards? Is she the loving but self-identified “shit mother” who is too harsh with her son? Is she the villain the author of the mysterious manuscript thinks she is? And is it possible to be all of those things at once?
Rounded out the cast is the always brilliant Kevin Kline and the equally talented Lesley Manville. These industry giants give even Cate Blanchett herself a run for her money!
Told across multiple timelines, we get to know Catherine at various stages of life, from new motherhood to her middle age as a cultural luminary. And while there aren’t elaborate chase scenes or copious amounts of special effects, the excellent pacing unfolds just enough of the mystery at a time. Disclaimer will have you clamouring for more, which is exactly the sort of scintillating TV we’ve seen too little of since Succession. Thank God for Disclaimer!
