There are some films that come out to very little fanfare. These films typically don’t perform very well, and are gone from the theatre before anyone even notices. In many cases these films disappear in time, and hardly anyone remembers them. Sometimes however, they find a second life when they reach home video / rentals. Such was the case with 2022’s Sisu. The film premiered at TIFF 2022, and after finally hitting theatres the next year it only grossed over 14 million worldwide. When it reached streaming services though it started to take off. Word of mouth spread, and soon its cult following helped it spawn a sequel. Sisu: Road To Revenge is out this weekend, and it you are a fan of the first one, you won’t want to miss it.
Sisu: Road To Revenge follows the story of mute hero Aatami (Jorma Tommila), a Finnish war hero who just wants to be left alone. After the events of the first film, he finds himself in Russia to tear down and move his family home back to Finland. Unfortunately for him, the Russian government wants him dead. And they release savage war Commander Igor Draganov (Stephen Lang) from prison to hunt him down. Igor has a history with Aatami as well, having killed his family and helped create the legend behind the man. In order to make his way home Aatami has to fight his way through Russia, something that even he might not be capable of doing.
If you liked Sisu, you will like Sisu: Road To Revenge. In fact you could play the films back to back, and it would feel like one long movie. Tommila continues to play Aatami as the almost unstoppable mute, who comes up with the most creative ways to kill his enemies and protect himself. Lang plays a good foil for him too. Neither show a lot of emotion, yet one comes off decidedly scarier than the other. Watch the film and decide for yourself who that is.
The easiest thing to say about Sisu: Road To Revenge is that it is bat shit crazy. There is nothing else you can say. At times the action sequences are so over the top that you will find yourself laughing and cheering. You won’t be the only one either as the entire audience is into this one. Like the first film though, the movie is more than a little gory at times, and there is a lot of blood. This is not a complaint, but just an observation. You will really need to suspend your disbelief however, as most of what you see is not even close to being possible.
Sisu: Road To Revenge is a fun, enjoyable movie, for the right audience. While it might not necessarily be a guy’s-only film, the majority of the crowd will be male. And they will be cheering like there is no tomorrow. It’s a shut your brain off and enjoy it for what it is type of film, so get your popcorn and coke ready, you are in for a ride.
