When director Anna Biller released The Love Witch in 2016 it caught audiences off guard. After all, while it was a modern horror film, it looked and felt like a b-movie horror film from the 60s or 70s. Complete with Technicolor, a cheesy plot, and over the top acting. It took Biller ten long years. But she is back with her latest tribute to that bygone era.
Like Biller’s previous film, The Face of Horror is an homage to the exploitation cinema of years gone by. Lovers of the genre will no doubt enjoy every minute of the film because of that. It’s not every day you get to watch a new film about a vengeful ghost seeking revenge, that looks like something old.
The Face of Horror does the homage job so well, that it also showcases why these types of films are no longer made. On one hand all of this is the point of the film, but on the other it’s also what makes the film drag on. You just want the placard to appear to let you know it’s time to go home.
On the surface The Face of Horror is a fun call back to old cinema, but it could have been done in a shorter way so it doesn’t start inducing yawns. It’s better to leave the past in the past, and create something new instead. Still, fans of Biller’s work are going to love the film no matter what anyone has to say.
