TIFF 2026: Our Review of ‘Carrie’

There’s no doubt that Stephen King is one of Hollywood’s favourite writers. After all, more than 60 adaptations of his works have graced the silver screen over the years. That doesn’t include TV shows either. King’s first novel, Carrie, has been adapted 4 times all by itself. That alone made it surprising when it was announced that frequent King collaborator Mike Flanagan has chosen Carrie to adapt as a TV series for Amazon Prime.

The basic plot points of the novel Carrie seem to be followed fairly closely in the new series. After all the story still follows an outcast teenage girl who has trouble navigating her high-school live, at the same time of dealing with her over-bearing, paranoid mother and her growing telekinetic powers. What’s different however is that the story has moved to modern times, with modern problems teenagers have to deal with such as social media. A lot of extra background has been added to the characters as well, such as the story behind Carrie’s father and an organization looking for children with Carrie’s type of special skills. These additions work for the overall story, and it will be interesting to see where they take things before the end.

Carrie is a fun, new, adaptation of Stephen King’s first novel, and if the first couple of episodes are any indication, fans are in for a treat. With all episodes being released at once, most fans are sure to binge watch it the day it launches.

While Roderick has only been writing movie reviews for a relatively short time, he's been a fan of film for as long as he can remember. It's a love affair that started when he saw Star Wars at a drive-in theatre in Kitchener when he was four years old. In the past decade he's fulfilled his dream of interviewing celebrities, attending red carpets events at festivals such as TIFF and writing reviews for outlets such as Realstylenetwork.com. He's always on the hunt for the next big thing to hit the screen.
