If you got the opportunity to choose what you wanted to do for the rest of eternity, what would it be? Who would you spend it with? Those are the questions the film Eternity asks, and unsurprisingly they are not easy to answer.
Larry Miller (Miles Teller) passes away suddenly and arrives in the afterlife. He decides to wait for his wife Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) who is dying of cancer and won’t be far behind. But she had a husband before, Luke (Callum Turner), who died tragically years prior and decided to wait for her as well. Now the question is, who will she choose to spend all of eternity with.
Eternity is a quirky, heart-warming, yet sad film. The film is even handed – there will be no Team Larry or Team Luke here.
The hardest part of this film had to be the casting. After all Olsen would have to have chemistry with both male leads in order for it to work. While she does, it’s not particularly strong with either of them. In fact when Larry has such a hard time figuring out why Joan fell in love with him in the first place, it’s a valid question the audience is asking themselves. This kind of prevents it from being as good as it could have been.
Eternity poses ponderable questions, and provides an interesting perspective on the afterlife. If anything, it’s a good date night option that will bring about an interesting conversation with your loved one.
