Every year a handful of anime dominate the spotlight, leaving dozens of great series for diehard anime fans to overlook. It’s not surprising either, after all, like all streaming services Crunchyroll tends to highlight the major sequels and series with massive fandom hype. This can make it difficult for the little guy to gain ground. Like all years however, hidden among the big titles are some incredible shows that slipped by quietly, despite offering fresh ideas, strong storytelling, and memorable characters. If you’re looking for anime that deliver something different, these under-the-radar gems on are well worth adding to your watch list.
Gachiakuta
Finding the right series to add to our list can be difficult, after all some of our favourites have found success in their own right. Gachiakuta is one of them, and it might just be the sleeper hit of 2025. Set in a dystopian society where the privileged live above and the condemned are thrown into a chaotic wasteland known as “the Pit,” the story follows Rudo, a boy framed for a crime he didn’t commit. The anime blends dark fantasy, kinetic action, haunting visuals, strong characters, and the themes of justice, inequality, and survival. If you want a grounded, stylish shōnen that feels relevant to today’s world with something real to say, this is the one to watch.
Maebashi Witches
For viewers who prefer softer, more reflective stories, Maebashi Witches offers a charming and heartfelt slice-of-life experience. Rather than focusing on battles or magical chaos, the series highlights the everyday lives of young witches living in a small town. The magic is less about casting spells and more about how a little wonder can change ordinary moments. The show explores friendship, self-growth, and community through warm storytelling and gentle humour. With soothing animation and a comforting tone, it feels like a break from the fast pace of typical fantasy anime.
Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show
One of the year’s most creative anime, Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show blends supernatural horror with internet culture in a way that feels surprisingly fresh. The story follows a young streamer pulled into a surreal virtual realm where eldritch beings influence reality. Its tone shifts between eerie tension, psychological twists, and dark comedy, making it hard to categorize but easy to get hooked on. The horror elements draw from classic cosmic themes, including insanity, the unknown, and the thin line between performance and authenticity. It’s a unique and bizarre ride, perfect for viewers craving something bold, unsettling, and different.
Turkey! Time to Strike
Despite its quirky premise, Turkey! Time to Strike delivers far more depth than anyone expects from a bowling-themed sports anime. The series follows a high-school bowling team whose lives take a strange turn when time anomalies begin affecting their matches and relationships. What starts as a lighthearted sports comedy evolves into a clever narrative about second chances. It also tackles the impact of choices and the unpredictability of the future. The character development is surprisingly strong, and the blend of humour, heartfelt moments, and sci-fi twists gives the show a distinct identity.
