TIFF 2024: Our Review of ‘Friendship’

For many of us, as we get older our lives slow down a little bit. We spend our days at work, perhaps doing a job we don’t overly enjoy, and spend our night sitting in front of a TV. Including our families. Sometimes however something, or some one, comes along to change that. This is the premise of Friendship, a new comedy starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd.

Craig (Tim Robinson) leads a quiet, simple life, but that starts to change when Brian (Paul Rudd) moves in next door. Brian leads a more exciting life, with dreams he aims himself at. Brian tries to rub off his ambition and charisma on a reluctant Craig. But when Craig’s obsessive personality becomes overwhelming, he backs away. Instead of a bromance, Craig alienates himself from his new pal, and he loses everything along the way.

Friendship is a dark comedy, and it may not be for everyone. For those who enjoy that type of humor however, it might just be the funniest film to be released this year. Robinson really takes his comedy to places other films are scared of trying. It’s cringe comedy at its finest, and you really need to pay attention to every little word that the characters speak to get the joke. Even words spoken under a characters breath can cause riotous laughter.

Robinson, and director Andrew DeYoung are fresh voices in comedy. And hopefully, Friendship is just the start of a remarkable career for both of them.

While Roderick has only been writing movie reviews for a relatively short time, he's been a fan of film for as long as he can remember. It's a love affair that started when he saw Star Wars at a drive-in theatre in Kitchener when he was four years old. In the past decade he's fulfilled his dream of interviewing celebrities, attending red carpets events at festivals such as TIFF and writing reviews for outlets such as Realstylenetwork.com. He's always on the hunt for the next big thing to hit the screen.
