TIFF 2023: Our Review of ‘Hit Man’

Richard Linklater has made a career of making films that withstand the test of time and transcend a time period and expectations from audiences. There are so many memorable films in his filmography, but his newest outing, Hit Man, may be one of his best films to date.

The film focuses on Gary Johnson (Glen Powell) who is your standard person, nothing too intriguing nothing too boring, expect that he’s juggling his teaching with being a hit man. However, things take a turn for the wild when he meets Madison (Adria Arjona) and realizes she’s setting up a hit to take care of her abusive partner. He decides to warn her against the idea, and not get incriminating evidence against her. This is all because he develops feelings for her and a relationship starts to develop creating, chaos between his fake hit man persona, his real persona, and this relationship he now has developing.

Hit Man works because of the inventiveness of Richard Linklater behind the script (co-written by Glen Powell and Skip Hollandsworth as well). We can also see his inventiveness in his direction throughout the movie. Not alone though, Powell and Arjona have red hot chemistry that creates a tension and passion in the film and goes unmatched. Though it is Powell’s ability to bring a comedic genius and master of disguise that transcends the film to new levels of brilliance. Overall, Hit Man is arguably one of the best films Linklater has made in his career.

My earliest movie memory, outside of my home theatre in my basement, was going to the local Video 99 and wanting to rent ET only to be told by the shop owner it was playing down the street in theatres. My love for cinema has been alive for as long as I can honestly remember. I would frequent the cinema minutes down from my house daily. It was a second home. Movies are an escape from the everyday world, a window into the soul, a distant friend. If I’m not watching a movie, I’m probably watching a tv show, if I’m doing neither I’m asleep.
