RWM 2024: Our Review of ‘Ink, Blood and Socks’

In our world homelessness, addiction and mental illness unfortunately go hand in hand. It’s an issue society deals with worldwide, and unfortunately there aren’t any easy answers on how to solve the problem. It effects every echelon of society as well, from the wealthy to the poor. Ink, Blood and Socks is a documentary that takes an in-depth look at one person dealing with it, and the people around her who have to find a way to live with it.

Ink, Blood and Socks takes a close look at a graffiti artist Psykos from Sweden. Her life is one of chaos, where she doesn’t know what each day will bring. But it wasn’t always that way. At one point she was a young, talented child. She lived with her upper middle-class family and had a bright future. Unfortunately she was introduced to drugs, and before she knew it she was living on the streets. A friend took her in, but he suffered with demons of his own, and after his death she became even more withdrawn from society. Throughout it all however she has her painting, or writing as she calls it, to cling to. It helps her survive, and find ways to live another day.

The documentary brings serious issues to the forefront, and shows us why the problem shouldn’t be ignored. Some of the scenes show such promise and love, while others showcase a person who is lost and has no idea where to turn. It can be tough.

While the film is a little basic and raw, it does give us something to think about. Perhaps next time instead of ignoring people you pass on the street who are very clearly suffering, you should look just a little closer at what they are going through.

While Roderick has only been writing movie reviews for a relatively short time, he's been a fan of film for as long as he can remember. It's a love affair that started when he saw Star Wars at a drive-in theatre in Kitchener when he was four years old. In the past decade he's fulfilled his dream of interviewing celebrities, attending red carpets events at festivals such as TIFF and writing reviews for outlets such as Realstylenetwork.com. He's always on the hunt for the next big thing to hit the screen.
