Let Me Handle This: Our Review of ‘Freakier Friday’

Freakier Friday takes place during contemporary times, two decades after the first film, as now, Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) is an A&R handling pop girlies like Ella (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan). Her mother, Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis), now married to Ryan (Mark Harmon), interferes with Anna’s parenting methods. And yeah, Anna is mother to Harper (Julia Butters). Harper, a surfer girl, is beefing with the new girl.

That new girl in her LA school is Lily Reyes (Sophia Hammons), hailing from Britain, and because life’s not fair, Anna falls in love with Lily’s dad Eric (Manny Jacinto). During Anna’s all ages bachelorette, Tess interferes again, putting tensions in the highest highs. All four meet Madame Jen (Vanessa Bayer), who casts a four way body switching spell.

The point of the spell is for the four to realize their similarities and differences, one of those big differences include maybe Anna wishing she chose music over motherhood. Anna accidentally sends Ella one of her songs back from her days in the band Pinkslip. Of course, that song is open to interpretation, one that Anna hopes to correct for Hunter.

A film that deals with the supernatural needs effects and this film has it. And it helps that it’s a sequel that tries to up the stakes of the first movie. A four way body switch in Nisha Ganatra’s Freakier Friday means that the characters are going to need to figure out who’s who. It’s fun to watch these actors say their one liners about how being in a different body feels…different. It’s also interesting for these characters, especially Tess, to behave different around their love interests

Anyway I, a grump, have notes, one of them about the direction of its performances. The four way body switch in Freakier Friday includes an American swapping bodies with a British person. I feel like both Curtis and Hammons should have accents – who would do worse though? My bet is that Hammons can do a better American accent because most Brits learn that. Speaking of Britiah accents, Manny Jacinto’s Canadian?!

Notes aside, Freakier Friday exists so that these actors can do wacky things onscreen because last time, viewers get to see Jamie Lee Curtis with punk rocker spiky hair. Despite what I insinuate about Curtis, there’s something refreshing about her wearing the British teen version of high fashion. It goes without saying that her chemistry with Lohan is great even while playing different characters.

Yes, I know Freakier Friday exists so that its actors can do wacky things onscreen, because cinema exists so that Lindsay Lohan can do some cringe flirting with Chad Michael Murray on purposes. Of course, there’s some poignant moments here when generations can show some empathy for each other. All of that takes place in a concert, the perfect venue for characters showing love.

Freakier Friday is available to watch in Canadian theatres.

This means that, for example, he will gush at the art direction in the Amityville house and will want to live there, which is a terrible idea because that house has ghosts.
