Anya Taylor Joy Has All The Right Moves In ‘The Queen’s Gambit’

You don’t have to be a chess fan to love the new Netflix series, The Queen’s Gambit!

Based on the novel by Walter Tevis, the Netflix limited series drama The Queen’s Gambit is a coming-of-age story that explores the true cost of genius.

Abandoned and entrusted to a Kentucky orphanage in the late 1950s, a young Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) discovers an astonishing talent for chess while developing an addiction to tranquilizers provided by the state as a sedative for the children.
Haunted by her personal demons and fueled by a cocktail of narcotics and obsession, Beth transforms into an impressively skilled and glamorous outcast while determined to conquer the traditional boundaries established in the male-dominated world of competitive chess.

Anya Taylor Joy is absolutely brilliant as Chess prodigy Beth Harmon. The 24 year old actress first became known for making appearances on the fantasy series Atlantis (2015), but made her breakthrough when she starred in the period horror film The Witch (2015), for which she received earned countless accolades.

The budding actress was most recently seen in Emma and will next star as Sandy in the psychological horror film Last Night in Soho, directed by Edgar Wright.

She will also re-team with filmmaker Robert Eggers (The Witch) for a starring role in the historical revenge film The Northman, alongside Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård, and Willem Dafoe. The film was described as “a Viking revenge saga set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century AND if that isn’t enough it was just announced that she will star in George Miller’s next MAD MAX movie!!

Look out for Anya, she is a force to be reckoned with.

The Queen’s Gambit is directed and written by two-time Academy Award nominee Scott Frank and also stars Marielle Heller and Moses Ingram.

The Queen’s Gambit starts streaming on Netflix on Friday.

Bonnie Laufer spoke with Anya Taylor Joy, Marielle Heller and Moses Ingram about working on the series.
