“Yeah see I mean from the front it looks like I have hair”, says Kaleb, code name The Eagle. This may seem like an innocuous conversation about male baldness but nothing is innocuous in The Stag. The Stag is a European chalet, the setting for Million Dollar Secret, aka Netflix’s ‘knockoff’ version of The Traitors. I’ve never seen a full episode of The Traitors, but Million Dollar Secret does successfully set itself apart. Here, there’s one contestant who has to survive a day without the others knowing that he’s a secret millionaire.
Part of being ‘chosen’ in Million Dollar Secret are the secret agendas that can give some contestants voting power. I have some memory of what the secret agendas were last season, one of them being very obvious. The same goes this time around, say a Gen-Alpha phrase, be someone’s shadow, put clothes pins on fellow contestants. Charles Wachter, the series’ show runner, does a good job choosing the right secret agendas for each millionaire. It’s fun to watch someone, say, say ‘no cap’ convincingly, as if these challenges are inherently awkward on purpose.
The secret agendas in this show are slightly more fun than the group activities that involve all of the contestants. The main challenges are not as inventive as the secret agendas because they’re just glorified treasure hunts. But these main challenges in Million Dollar Secret are in tune with the show’s relatively smart thesis. Some of these are glorified treasure hunts have some of the younger contestants do their share of diving and running. Others have the contestants test each other about who’s lying or telling the truth, which is a good skill.
This part of my review for Million Dollar Secret is going to get parasocial – it’s bad to have opinions on these quasi famous folks. Last season, spoiler, had contestant Chris Allen overstaying his welcome, finally going home after six episodes. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt that he had a bad edit, which some of the contestants here do too. But thankfully, this time around, some ‘bad edit’ contestants go, leaving us the morally gray contestants. Even some contestants who get abrasive redeem themselves eventually and everyone seems to be likeable.
I don’t want to give away spoilers for Million Dollar Secret but it involves two of the likeable constants. I say two because it usually takes two to be romantic, even if this show’s not about romance. Power dynamics are in play especially in a show where maybe some people are lying about their actual professions. The caper aspect is fun especially in a show that feels glamorous because of its European setting or the group activities. Host Peter Serfanowicz explains games during the group’s poker night, when multiple games are taking place.
Netflix is the only place to stream the first five episodes of Million Dollar Secret’s second season.
