‘We Can Be Heroes’ – Catching up with Robert Rodriguez

Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez has given us many movies over the last few decades. But he might be best known for his fun filled family fare!

Rodriguez, who have given us the Spy Kids franchise and Shark Boy and Lava Girl is back with another family offering just in time for the holidays!

We Can Be Heroes, is a new superhero film written, directed and shot by Robert Rodriguez. It serves as a stand-alone sequel to The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D (2005).

In typical Rodriguez fare, the plot centers around some pretty awesome kids. When alien invaders capture Earth’s superheroes, their kids must learn to work together to save their parents — and the planet.

The film stars Priyanka Chopra, Pedro Pascal, Boyd Holbrook, Sung Kang, Taylor Dooley, and Christian Slater. And it stars eleven young actors who are a delight to watch!

Rodríguez’s remarkable, 30-year career started with his first feature film, El Mariachi. It reached huge success in the early 1990s after grossing $2 million – which was a huge feat considering his budget was $7,000.

Doing more with less has become his trademark so to speak, going on to make Desperado, Four Rooms and From Dusk Till Dawn. These are movies that helped Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas and Danny Trejo become established Hollywood actors.  Then in 2001, he embarked on what became the successful Spy Kids trilogy. In the same spirit of Spy Kids, Rodríguez made the superhero fantasy film The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 2005.

He hopes We Can Be Heroes, premiering on December 25th on Netflix, will bring families together for a fun viewing experience.

Bonnie Laufer spoke to Robert Rodriguez and two of the children superheroes, YaYa Gosselin and the adorable Vivien Lyra Blair.
