Alzheimer’s strips away who we are. It clouds the past, and leaves people in daze. For Lucia (Justin Vivian Bond), there could be nothing worse. She has spent her life fighting for gay and trans rights, but as she’s grown tired of fighting. She wants nothing more than to retire to a place where people will care for her during her final years, and find ways to help her remember who she is. Unfortunately for her, the facility she has chosen doesn’t support her the way they should. They want to change her back to the life she left behind. They want to dull her life from the make-up, and beautiful, colourful dresses, to plain clothing and a unpainted face. As her memory continues to fade, Lucia’s will to fight begins to fade as well, and her future gets even cloudier.

With Neverman, Cuban-Canadian filmmaker Rodridgo Barriuso has created an emotional, caring and deeply understanding film about life. Let’s face it, while the central character is trans, the condition she is suffering from effects millions of people around the world. For many of them, they don’t get the care and compassion they deserve either.

Bond’s performance is incredible. She brings you along with her as she experiences what her life has become. Warning, tears will be shed.

Neverman has strong performances from Bond and her supporting cast, but the story is what pulls it all together. It’s a film that will stick with you long after the credits roll.
