Before Nobody, it was hard to imagine Bob Odenkirk in any role outside of comedy or drama. Especially after the career defining role of Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. An action star he was not. At least not your typical action star. Now with two Nobody films under his belt and Normal hitting screens at TIFF, he only further bucks stereotypes while cementing his new status as an action hero.
Ulysses (Odenkirk) is the new sheriff in a small Minnesota town, Normal. After an attempted bank robbery goes wrong, Ulysses finds himself caught in the middle of something completely unexpected and life threatening.
The first thing people are going to think, thanks in part to the title, is that Normal is just a clone of Nobody. Things couldn’t be further from the truth though. Ulysses is a very different character, with his own set of problems. Odenkirk makes sure the two characters differ (and not just by growing a moustache). Even the movies are different beasts.
Normal never takes itself seriously either. The plot is more than a little absurd, but it’s doesn’t distract the audience from what’s going on. There are a few scenes that will make you laugher harder than you have in a long time too.
Normal is fun, action packed, and a great way to spend an hour and a half. The bigger the screen, the better too, because you don’t want to miss a thing.
