Good films based on video games can be hard to come by. It’s hard to understand why, especially with the detail that goes into the stories of a lot of video games these days. Perhaps they just don’t translate well for more general audiences who don’t play games. Exit 8 is a good game adaptation. It’s better than the ones that has come in the last couple of years.
Kazunari Ninomiya plays a nameless character who has a dead end job, and his girlfriend is pregnant with his child. To make matters worse, he doesn’t even know if he wants to be a father. Or is capable of being a good one. On his way to visit his girlfriend in the hospital however his worries about his life changes drastically when he finds himself trapped in a maze that he needs to solve.
This is the type of film where the story far outweighs the acting. Not that Ninomiya is bad, it’s just that you are him. You are in his shoes as you try to solve the mystery and escape. Also, Exit 8 does a great job playing into our insecurities and fears. This is also the type of film that warrants a second viewing so you can read into the deeper meaning behind what the character goes through.
Exit 8 does get a little repetitive. Thankfully, its hour and a half runtime though prevents it from getting annoying. Overall it’s a fun film and will keep you on your toes.
