Seeds is a rip-roaring good time! Directed by and starring Kaniehtiio Horn, this work of comedy-horror will have you both gasping in fright and laughing out loud in the theatre. But amidst all the rollicking fun, Seeds also manages to ask important questions about the ethics of modern agriculture. In short, it nails the balance between entertainment and social commentary that the comedy-horror genre is all about.
As the story opens, we meet Ziggy (Horn), a thirty-something woman who has left her Kanienʼkehá:ka First Nations Reserve to work as a bike courier in downtown Toronto, where she lives in an apartment on top of a Pizza Pizza. Ziggy also has a promising side hustle as an influencer whose vlogs explore her Indigenous heritage. Ziggy even has a deal with Nature’s Oath (a company that seems based on the real-life Monsanto). Nature’s Oath is paying own heroine handsomely to promote their new seeds. But are these seeds as good for the environment as Sacred Oath claims? And do they want more from Ziggy than meets the eye? These are the questions Ziggy must ask herself.
When a beloved relative needs someone to watch her home while on vacation, Ziggy reluctantly returns to her Kanienʼkehá:ka community. And that’s when the action really takes off! A series of well-timed jokes and lots of gore ensues. Admittedly, Seeds does have the occasional plot hole, but the action is so propulsive that you won’t care.
What is most enjoyable about Seeds, however, is Horn herself. Known for her work on Reservation Dogs and Rutherford Falls, Horn demonstrates true Star Quality as a leading lady. Horn has that rare comic timing that’s so precise, she can make you laugh with something as simple as the goofy way she slurps out of a straw during a tense scene. Versatile as she is, Horn also excels when she must abandon her goofy influencer persona and transform into a righteous warrior. Is there nothing she can’t do?
Ultimately, Seeds is rollicking fun. We cannot wait to watch the rest of Horn’s career geminate…
