Does growing up with a broken family make the children of that family just as dysfunctional? It’s a question that has plagued psychiatrists for a long time, and there really is no easy answer. It’s also the question at the heart of Millers In Marriage, a new film written, directed and starring Edward Burns.
Eve Miller (Gretchen Mol) gave up her career as an up and coming musician to start a family. Now her husband disappears for days at a time on the road, while drinking his life away. And she’s considering cheating on him. Her brother Andy (Edward Burns) has found himself on the path to happiness. He has a new love after his wife suddenly left him. Their sister Maggie (Julianna Margulies) finds herself in the middle of an affair. This happens after her career starts to overshadow her passionless husband’s career.
Millers In Marriage is a depressing look at the lives of siblings who are unhappy with the choices they’ve made. It’s too long, too sad, and doesn’t leave much room for hope. While it does show at least one of them making an attempt at change by the end, it still isn’t enough to make the film worthwhile enough to sit through.
Millers in Marriage has an audience, but it’s bound to be small. Movies are meant to help you relax and ignore the world around you for a couple of hours, not make you more aware of all the issues people have with it.
