TIFF 2023: Our Review of ‘Wicked Little Letters’

Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley star in a true story about women over town receiving obscene scandalous letters. Those letters’ consequences will eventually unfold in Thea Sharrock’s Wicked Little Letters and this is, simply put, one of the most outrageously entertaining and enjoyable movies of the year.

The movie focuses on neighbours and at one point, friendly at that. These neighbours are Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). Tensions flare as they live explicitly different styles of life. Rose is a free spirit who uses a dictionary’s worth of colourful language, while Edith is a strictly Christian woman who is easily offended and put off. One day, things take a turn for the worst between the two neighbours, and the following day, an incredibly rude letter found its way to Edith. Eventually, this becomes a police matter, and Rose is the accused. A merry band of friends and acquaintances take it upon themselves to prove Rose’s innocence before she loses custody of her daughter.

The performances in Wicked Little Letters, but specifically both Olivia Colman (this is her glorious return to comedy, thank God) and Jessie Buckley, are what shine throughout the film. The supporting cast is also exquisite but Colman and Buckley have audiences erupting with laughter and they bring so much heart throughout this hilarious and wild true story. Wicked Little Letters is the wicked little movie that audiences won’t be able to stop talking about.

My earliest movie memory, outside of my home theatre in my basement, was going to the local Video 99 and wanting to rent ET only to be told by the shop owner it was playing down the street in theatres. My love for cinema has been alive for as long as I can honestly remember. I would frequent the cinema minutes down from my house daily. It was a second home. Movies are an escape from the everyday world, a window into the soul, a distant friend. If I’m not watching a movie, I’m probably watching a tv show, if I’m doing neither I’m asleep.
