TIFF 2023: Our Review of ‘His Three Daughters’

Most people, presumably, had to live seeing their parents get sick, or their grandparents get sick. Azazel Jacob’s newest feature His Three Daughters will be a devastating blow to the heart as it is one of the most realistic look at watching a loved one perish in front of one’s eyes. It is never easy watching a parent slowly dissipate. But it is the relationship between his three children that is the heart and soul of this beautifully touching film.

The film focuses on Katie (Carrie Coon) Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) as they’re all at their fathers’ living space. They’re preparing for his final days so they can spend time with him and possibly fix their relationship with him and each other. All three daughters have different jobs, lifestyles and opinions on how their fathers final days should be. And this obviously leads to disagreements and chaos amongst the three in a time of need and where personal issues should be set aside.

His Three Daughters excels because of the powerhouse performances that come from Lyonne, Coon and Olsen. Each of them bring a different style of character to life and thus, creates a powder keg dynamic throughout the movie. Everyone brings 110 percent to the film and the emotional impact the movie lays out simply cannot be denied and creates an intense beautiful world.

My earliest movie memory, outside of my home theatre in my basement, was going to the local Video 99 and wanting to rent ET only to be told by the shop owner it was playing down the street in theatres. My love for cinema has been alive for as long as I can honestly remember. I would frequent the cinema minutes down from my house daily. It was a second home. Movies are an escape from the everyday world, a window into the soul, a distant friend. If I’m not watching a movie, I’m probably watching a tv show, if I’m doing neither I’m asleep.
