In this limited series, the titular Alice and Jack meet on an app, have a memorable one-night stand, and then, for some reason, become irretrievably obsessed with each other. Unfortunately for our protagonists, that mutual fixation doesn’t mean everything will be smooth sailing.
Alice and Jack purports to be a series about the messiness of falling in love, but literally every problem our protagonists encounter could be overcome with the help of a good therapist. For her part, Alice (Andrea Riseborough) does something or other that pays her obscene amounts of money and protects her heart by sleeping with a different man every night. Even after her lovely date with Jack, she insists he shouldn’t call her. Why would it be such a bad idea for him to contact her again? Well, she’s Manic Pixie Trauma Girl, whose every erratic behaviours the show writes off as the product of her (admittedly serious) emotional scars. As rich as Alice is, no therapist seems equipped to help her!
Jack (Domhnall Gleeson) is a sociopath who impregnates a woman he is casually dating, then convinces her to marry him and raise the baby together instead of aborting the pregnancy as planned. By this point, it is clear Jack does not deserve a woman’s love, but the show expects you to root for him to get together with Alice when she attempts to reconnect after her mother’s death.
Ultimately, this romantic comedy is neither funny (I didn’t laugh once) nor romantic. Just skip it!
