Sometimes the simple ways are the best…

LADIES  & GENTLEMEN…in this corner its film fans from all across the globe looking forward to some good old fashion escapist monster action.  And in this corner…it’s Godzilla vs. Kong which is delivering an unequivocal knock out which will easily vault this film into the rankings of one of the most profitable of 2021…plus it’s actually pretty good.

Legends collide as Godzilla and Kong, the two most powerful forces of nature, clash on the big screen in a spectacular battle for the ages. As a squadron embarks on a perilous mission into fantastic uncharted terrain, unearthing clues to the Titans’ very origins and mankind’s survival, a conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.

If you’re looking for any kind of nuanced social commentary in Godzilla vs. Kong it’s probably best that you leave now…are they gone?…good.

To put it bluntly, Godzilla vs. Kong is just pedal to metal kind of fun that we only get in a properly built up WWE storyline (if we’re lucky).  This film is effortlessly  simple, effective and it keeps us glued to the screen all the way through.

Director Adam Wingard was unequivocally the perfect choice for this next chapter in the saga as he managed to actually let there all be a story while it stages some fight scenes that made me nostalgic for when we were allowed to see these things on a screen as large as humanly possible.

Having come from a horror background, this is legitimately the first of these films where we could feel the actual tension rather than just marveling at the spectacle of carnage that we are witnessing.  This movie goes out of its way to give us everything we need, pure visual insanity with some actual emotional stakes for what we bare witness too.

Wingard finds a kind of balance that is honestly rarely seen in these kinds of film as we are sucked into the destruction and violence that these two iconic titans can bring to the screen while also knowing that occasionally it’s nice if we care about the destruction and the people who are being affected by it.

While the ensemble cast is there is advance us to the next scene more than anything else, there’s no denying that the returning Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler along with Rebecca Hall, Alexander Skarsgaard, Demian Bichir, Julian Dennison, Bryan Tyree Henry, Eiza Gonzalez and Lance Reddick do good work but that are mere background players with our two leads front and centre almost every step of the way.

The picture and sound quality on the 4K disc are first rate as the sound will rumble through your speakers and the detail of these monsters will pop off the screen.  There are 10 behind the scenes featurettes on the Blu-Ray detailing the making of the film as well.

If anything, I’d say that Godzilla vs. Kong is the first of these films to give us a real sense of scale to the spectacle and that feels important now more than ever.  With very few IMAX scale screens to see and hear this booming on, Adam Wingard and his team have made a film that will make you jump no matter where you watch it and that’s the real mark of some excellent film-making.
