The Summer Of 1980: Our Review of ‘Everybody Wants Some’

Posted in Movies, Theatrical by - April 01, 2016

Richard Linklater’s latest film, Everybody Wants Some takes us back to late summer in 1980. Set in a Texas college campus, the film follows a group of college baseball players during three days before classes start.

The group shares two baseball houses, just outside campus, within distance to the local disco bars and more. As the “freshmen” arrive, the group gets to know each other in typical college fashion; pulling pranks, philosophizing, and most importantly, figuring out how “to get some…” The point of this weekend is to figure who is better than whom; competition is no game to this group of young baseball players.

In typical Linklater fashion, there are memorable characters — the philosopher (Glen Powell), the jock with a brain (Blake Jenner), the ‘raw dawg’ (Juston Street), the ‘dumb jock’ (Temple Baker), and the ‘country boy’ (Will Brittain) — who are supported by a very funny and talented cast. This is a guys’ film primarily, but the humour is not lost to anyone of us during our late teens just about to embark on another life journey.

Over the course of the three days, the guys go to a disco bar (yes, disco is still very popular at this time), they also go to a country bar, a punk concert, and a theatre department students’ party. The main reason for going to these parties is to meet some girls. Freshman Jake (Blake Jenner) finally meets a theatre major (Zoey Deutch). At first they appear to have nothing in common, until their romance blossoms (after a few hours) and they realize there is more than ‘meets the eye’ with each other.

Many other things happen throughout the film; some serious moments mixed with some funny ones. The soundtrack to Everybody Wants Some leaves nothing to be desired as it covers 80s heavies like Divo, Kool and the Gang, Sugar Hill Gang, Foreigner, and many many others. The film is not perfect, but it certainly entertains. Linklater definitely makes a nostalgic film, not exactly like Dazed And Confused, but good enough for fans of his work.
