Relatable: Our Review of ‘Taylor Tomlinson: Have It All’

Taylor Tomlinson begins her new comedy special Taylor Tomlinson: Have It All light, well, light considering her other material. One of her stories is about an impromptu auction that went well in her favour. She ends that story by saying “Now, I’ve never paid for sex…but I did drop seven grand on eye contact with Hugh Jackman”. Dramatic pause, crowd goes wild, Tomlinson is a master of her craft. Seven grand will literally make me more financially stable, yet she spends it on Hugh Jackman’s gloves.

It’s slightly difficult to listen to Tomlinson’s story and believe her title’s conceit, and yes, I am bitter. As the title suggests, she may have disposable income but she doesn’t have the love of her life. But this is, again, a comedy special and not a pity party, and she tells her DC audience how she finds levity in single life. This new special has her discussing things like being the third wheel to her married friends. She also discusses things we all can relate to, no matter who we’re spending Valentine’s Day with.

I’m probably reading into this special too much in comparison to Tomlinson’s previous ones, but here goes. There’s something elemental about her metaphors, like one of her specials where she talks about beating mental illness being like having water wings. Taylor Tomlinson: Have It All incorporates her comedy’s previous elements for more relatable, universal concerns. During the special’s climax, she makes fun of hokey sleep hacks. Those tips vary from lavender nonsense to sleeping in the dark, which, to paraphrase her, duh!

Part of navigating single life is navigating the fact that most people are more sexually open now. Maybe I’m giving Tomlinson too much credit for this, but as a younger person, she’s a normal person about sexuality. She is generations removed from boomer nonsense and points out the lighter versions of contemporary queerphobia. One of her jokes about the topic is an imaginary situation where she has to prove her bisexuality. That joke, by the way, involves Margot Robbie which, I mean, Robbie is beautiful enough.

But back to having it all, Tomlinson proposes two reasons why she and many people can’t have that. Her first theory is that we don’t want to see people who are perfect, and I agree with that. The second is that having it all is a lot of responsibility. Responsibility – that’s a topic that viewers can explore and end up in the weeds, and I wish she kind of did. But then again, this is comedy and not a treatise and she accomplishes a lot in this special.

This means that, for example, he will gush at the art direction in the Amityville house and will want to live there, which is a terrible idea because that house has ghosts.
