Rachel Harkin (Camila Morrone) sits in her car, looking out onto darkness for her fiancee Nick (Adam DiMarco). They’re on a road trip to a cabin where her future in-laws, the Cunninghams, a rich family, are residing. They’re also getting married in that cabin, and like most weddings, a lot of things go horrifically wrong. Her wedding gown goes missing so she needs one from her mother in law Victoria (Jennifer Jason Leigh). She thinks the Cunninghams are weird.
That’s because some of the Cunninghams believe in a figure they call The Sorry Man. Nick’s siblings Jules (Jeff Willbusch) and Portia (Gus Birney) believe in The Sorry Man because Jules saw him. But what Rachel doesn’t know is that The Sorry Man and her go way back for many generations. It’s a generational curse that may pass to Jules’ son Jude (Sawyer Fraser) and Rachel enlists the help of her future sister in law Nell (Karla Crome) to beat it.
This miniseries comes from the twisted mind of Haley Z. Boston, a Guillermo del Toro and Netflix alumnus. It plants enough red herrings and seeds that gives its viewers enough expectations while giving twists that feel subversive. I mean, if Ted Levine is playing Boris, someone’s father in law, someone will make their valid assumptions. Is he the patriarch of a family that sacrifices brides or is he a good guy, who knows? But thankfully, these supporting characters don’t steal the show from its two lead characters who are in love. Mostly though, Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen is a showcase for Rachel, spunkier than one’s average bride.
Horror isn’t usually my beat – because of this, Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen is a delight. My lack of familiarity with the genre means that miniseries like this will surprise me with every watch. I’ve been dropping hints that this subverts the usual tropes of the ‘woman vs. weird family’ horror sub-genre. And it does so by showing that, light spoilers, Rachel’s the one who inadvertently brings evil to others. She’s a compelling anti-heroine in this meta-narrative, someone discovering a power she doesn’t know how to use. She embodies what I assume are metaphorical versions of women having to choose between others or themselves.
Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen looks a lot like Netflix’ other shows – some scenes have dark cinematography. But what sets it apart are its details that make one question love that way these characters do. There are enough episodes here that begin with a penny that Rachel most of the time picks up. Maybe these pennies mean the obvious thing – that she’s lucky despite a curse that haunts her. But then she doesn’t notice the lucky penny until later, one that Nick leaves for her – or so he says. Ignoring a lucky penny isn’t a good omen for one’s wedding day, so will her wedding end in blood?
Find out if Rachel beats her bloody curse by watching Netflix’ new horror miniseries Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen.
