Not Just For Kids: Our Review of ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’

Movies based on video games can be a mixed bag. On one side you get the decent adaptations like Mortal Kombat or Sonic The Hedgehog, but on the other you get the terrible one such as the 1993 adaptation of Super Mario Bros., or Alone in the Dark. Five Nights At Freddy’s thankfully is one of the former ones. And it’s a film that not only will kids and adults enjoy. But its story should appease both fans of the video game franchise, and people who have never heard of it before.

Mike (Josh Hutcherson) just can’t seem to catch a break. Not only are the bills piling up, but he has a hard time holding onto a job. At heart he wants to do the right thing, but he always seems to find a way to mess things up. It’s something that haunts him ever since someone kidnapped his brother when they were children. After his latest mishap, his employment agent (Matthew Lillard) finds it difficult to get him work, but an opportunity to be a night security guard at an old pizzeria might be the opportunity he is looking for. Unfortunately, the pizzeria has a dark history, and security guards don’t seem to last long working there.

Five Nights at Freddy’s manages to hook you right away. And while the premise of evil animatronics might seem a little silly, it keeps you entertained. It’s a nice mix of suspense and humor that does it. Although, somewhere around the middle, it kind of loses its way for a few beats. No doubt children who’ve grown up playing the game will enjoy it. But adults will find themselves drawn to it as well. They might even find themselves choosing a favourite character or two that they want to see more of.

Fans of the franchise will also enjoy a fair number of easter eggs that point to the game. This, by the way, includes a surprise cameo. The story of the games are ingrained in the fans’ head, but they might even be surprised by a plotline or two. And if you don’t know anything about the series, all the better. Once the film is over, you might want to do a bit of research into who everyone is though, because the storyline is rather interesting.

One of the things that really stood out about this movie was the crowd. The fans of the series were extremely lively, which added to the overall experience. It’s the type of movie you may want to see opening weekend just to get that. The acting was nothing special, but it didn’t need to be, as the real stars of the film were Freddy and his gang. You won’t be disappointed if you decide to stay while the credits are rolling either.

Overall, Five Nights at Freddy’s is a fun film. It may not ever be a classic scary movie that gets watched every Halloween, but its sure to become a cult classic that fans of the game will remember for a long time.

While Roderick has only been writing movie reviews for a relatively short time, he's been a fan of film for as long as he can remember. It's a love affair that started when he saw Star Wars at a drive-in theatre in Kitchener when he was four years old. In the past decade he's fulfilled his dream of interviewing celebrities, attending red carpets events at festivals such as TIFF and writing reviews for outlets such as Realstylenetwork.com. He's always on the hunt for the next big thing to hit the screen.
