Hot Docs 2026: Our Review of ‘Myspace’

It’s hard to remember a time before social media. It’s become ingrained in our lives so much that many of us are checking our feeds at least on a daily basis. According to recent stats, almost 70% of the world’s population uses social media in some form or another. Let’s flash back to 2003 however. And that wasn’t the case. There were sites around similar to Facebook, but nothing really took off the same way. Then came Myspace. It began as a playground where people shared their favourite music, and it quickly evolved into a place where people messaged each other, shared their Top 8 friends, and became the place to hang out with people of a similar mind frame.

Myspace is nostalgic look at the platform that really launched the social media craze we are currently living through. It did much more than that however. The documentary shows how it helped with the rise of Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, brought Barack Obama to a younger audience when he ran for president, and helped make celebrities out of people who may not have gotten a break otherwise. The documentary interviews comedian Dane Cook, director Kevin Smith, and many other pseudo-celebrities such as Tila Tequila and Jeffree Star. It even spends a lot of time with the people responsible for creating it, including everyone’s first friend Tom.

This documentary offers something for everyone who has ever been a part of social media. Even if you are too young to have used Myspace, it has played a part in the social media networks you do use.  It’s a trip down memory lane, while giving you a history lesson you may not have known. Myspace is an important part of our digital history, and this film will show you why.

While Roderick has only been writing movie reviews for a relatively short time, he's been a fan of film for as long as he can remember. It's a love affair that started when he saw Star Wars at a drive-in theatre in Kitchener when he was four years old. In the past decade he's fulfilled his dream of interviewing celebrities, attending red carpets events at festivals such as TIFF and writing reviews for outlets such as Realstylenetwork.com. He's always on the hunt for the next big thing to hit the screen.
