The Balcony Movie is truly a documentary that could have only happened due to the current political climate of COVID. Writer and director Pawel Lozinski decides to interview anyone and everyone. He interviews whoever happens to walk down the sidewalk outside of his house. While porched up on his balcony with a boom mic and a camera he talks to complete strangers, his family, and anyone who passes by. And he asks them about their day, questions, the meaning of life and anything else he can possibly think of. While this works for a short period of time, there are too few and far in between interesting stories that come from this effort.
The Balcony Movie makes the best out of a bad situation. Everyone is essentially in lockdown, and has to isolate within their homes. So what better way to pass the time than by interviewing complete and utter strangers. Whether it be children walking by and noticing him and interacting with him. He even asks a recently released convict questioning if returning to his life of crime is better than being released and homeless. The Balcony Movie sheds a light on some political and social issues, and that is when it shines. But when it focuses on what the passerby is reading or where they’re off to, it stumbles and fails to hold the audiences attention.
