Hot Docs 2022: Our Review of ‘Bucolic’

Bucolic (Bukolika) focuses on a mother and daughter who are living far away from the mainland, living their lives almost off the grid and keeping to themselves. Danusia and Basia are the two women who are the center of this documentary as they’re mother and daughter respectfully. They do butt heads throughout the documentary they do show their perspective on their life. They have several stray dogs as well. While life is certainly different and challenging for Danusia and Basia they definitely try their best to get by and make everything work.

What makes Bucolic so interesting is the way they show their way of life and what obstacles come with living this kind of lifestyle. They have different opinions and values that they want for themselves. And this is where things start to get heated between the mother and daughter. The film is at first jarring and shocking at the way Danusia and Basia live. But there is beauty in the simplicity of their lifestyle choices and something beautiful in the simplicity of it all.

Bucolic brings forward the bliss and beauty of living off the grid. Meanwhile, it also showing the insurmountable amount of tragedy. One that comes with living this far off the grid and from other people. The loneliness is palatable. But it further explains why as humanity we crave an escape, just sometimes the escape is too much for some people.

My earliest movie memory, outside of my home theatre in my basement, was going to the local Video 99 and wanting to rent ET only to be told by the shop owner it was playing down the street in theatres. My love for cinema has been alive for as long as I can honestly remember. I would frequent the cinema minutes down from my house daily. It was a second home. Movies are an escape from the everyday world, a window into the soul, a distant friend. If I’m not watching a movie, I’m probably watching a tv show, if I’m doing neither I’m asleep.
