Everyone is out here looking for something – money, fame, or just a reason to keep going forward. This film is the epitome of these ideals, tied into the mundane existence of driving a ride share around the city of Toronto.
Self-Driver is about D, a young father and partner trying to make ends meet, doing this for himself and his small family after losing his professional career due to company cutbacks. While routinely making insufficient money with his current driver service, he is offered the opportunity to try a new app that promises to open up a world of possibilities, especially surrounding his abilities to make quick and easy financial gains. From the moment he starts his first drive, he discovers a new underground world filled with crazy characters and unpredictable situations – leading him to make choices that conflict with his morals and question the truth behind what it actually means to have free will.
This film defines comedic-thriller cinema, keeping the viewer guessing along the way with a balance between unease and entertainment. Director Michael Pierro has created an exceptional piece with limited funds and showed the importance of plot and concept within the film world. As an individual who struggles with focus on a good day (ADHD will do that to a person), I found myself sucked into this narrative and entranced by the beautiful cinematography that makes the viewer feel like they are a part of this crazy world. Keep this film on your radar, because it definitely is one you can’t miss.
