Cinefranco 2021: Our Review of ‘Premiere Vague’

Premiere Vague is moving film about the the first one hundred days of the Global COVID pandemic, set in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is a choral type film, focusing on four different stories that all interconnect through the course of the film. It shows Daniel (Fayolle Jean Jr.), Fanny (Myranda Plourde), Marianne (Marie-Sophie Roy) and Samuel (Mathieu Lorain Dignard), all trying to navigate their lives through the emotional ups and downs at the start of the pandemic. Their stories are fictional but Premiere Vague features real footage of press interviews with Premier Legault and Doctor Arruda, providing real context to the rapidly changing times and tone of the film.

Premiere Vague was based on an original idea by Jarett Mann with Kevin T. Landry, Max Dufaud, Remi Frechette and Reda Lahmouis directing and writing the film. The filmmakers really capture the essence of those initial tough one hundred days starting from March, 12th, 2020. Although there are so many different stories going on in the film there is a nice cohesive visual style. There are also some truly beautiful aerial shots of Montreal. Although visually cohesive, the narrative tonal shifts from story to story are sometimes emotionally jarring. There is a lot going on in Premiere Vague and sometimes all of the different narrative perspectives can feel too much like four different films in one. Some of the main narrative stories naturally end up being more emotionally resonant than others.

Premiere Vague is a great look at how human relationships adapt in such an isolated and uncertain time. The filmmakers capture a real undercurrent of fear, anxiety and grief throughout the film. It is a really thoughtful and emotional snapshot of the start of the Global Pandemic.
