‘Blockbuster’ – Randall Park and Melissa Fumero give us the Scoop

Just when you thought Blockbuster Video completely disappeared, leave it to Netflix to give it another chance!

Netflix and Universal Television have teamed up on Blockbuster: a new comedy series documenting the lives of the staff at the last remaining Blockbuster store in the United States.

The hilarious series created by Vanessa Ramos (Superstore, Brooklyn Nine Nine) stars Randall Park as Timmy, the owner and manager of the last standing Blockbuster video store. That store exists in a world of constant available on-demand content. Within that world, a group of nostalgic workers and their small-town community come together. They’re trying to save the last Blockbuster Video store in the world. The series explores what it takes – and more specifically who it takes – for a small business to succeed. To do so against all odds in a dying industry, in a dying strip mall, in a dying town.

The irony in this series is Blockbuster was rivals with Netflix as, in the early-mid 2000s when Netflix and Blockbuster both traded in the DVD rental market.  At one point, Netflix offered to sell itself to Blockbuster, but of course that never happened.  Now almost 20 years later, Netflix is airing the series about Blockbuster.

The series boasts a great supporting cast  in Timmy’s loyal staff which consists of Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine Nine) who plays Eliza. She’s a headstrong woman in her 40s and dedicated mother whose marriage to her high school sweetheart is on the rocks. She left Harvard after one semester to start a family and now works at Blockbuster. Olga Merediz (In the Heights) is Connie, the maternal one int he group. She works at Blockbuster because of the friends she’s made there and certainly not for the money.

Tyler Alvarez (Never Have I Ever) is Carlos, a young movie aficionado who loves his job at the video store. Madeleine Arthur, friend to Tyler and the girl next door.  JB Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm) brings his wit and charm to Percy, the strip mall and store owner. His daughter works at the Blockbuster store and Kamaia Fairburn (Overlord and the Underwoods) plays Kayla. She’s the youngest of the main cast members and is described as stylish and too cool for school.

All 10 episodes of Blockbuster arrives on Netflix on November 3rd, 2022.
