Woman of the Hour is the story of the Dating Game Killer. It then depicts how the infamous serial killer Rodney Alcara eventually got caught. Anna Kendrick’s direction here is more than sublime. Also, Ian MacAllister McDonald script doesn’t focus on the brutality of Alcala’s crimes. He focuses, instead, on the humans behind the story, creating a different gaze for this serial killer drama.
The film first focuses on Rodney Alcara (Daniel Zovatto), intercuts between timelines and follows his killing spree across the United States. The film’s second subject is Cheryl Bradshaw (Anna Kendrick), who’s trying to break out in Hollywood as a movie star. What’s stopping her are her morals, as she avoids gross producers. Her agent tells her to go on The Dating Show to get her face out there. What she is unaware of is that she can potentially win a date with a serial killer whose yet to be discovered.
There are plenty of things to appreciate about Woman of the Hour. But first and foremost, there is the casting and performance done by Daniel Zovatto. He plays the infamous killer so well that it is genuinely terrifying how effortlessly his performance comes across. It is bone chilling, and his performance will certainly stay with its audience long after the movie finishes. As well, Kendrick’s chooses to intercut timelines as well as not focus and linger on the violence but rather, again, the people. This puts this serial killer tale among the best of them.
