A Fun Adventure: Our Review of ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’

When Shrek came out in 2001, it immediately turned heads for its wit and humor. It also modernized fairy tales for a new audience. It wasn’t until three years later however that the sequel introduced its most popular character. Well, outside of the grumpy Ogre, his wife and donkey, and that character is Puss In Boots. Puss In Boots (voiced by Antonio Banderas) stole the show. So much so that he appeared in the following sequels, his own spin-off movie and more. The character was so popular. It’s surprising that it has taken 11 years for a sequel to the original 2011 film to hit the big screen.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish follows the nimble bandit as he discovers he has burned through eight of his nine lives. A mysterious bounty hunter is also stalking him, planning on taking his ninth. At first he hides away from his fate and retires. But he discovers the existence of a fallen star that can give him back his lives. So Puss joins his old partner Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek). And joining them is a dog, Perrito (Harvey Guillen), on what could be one final adventure.

One of the charming things about the Shrek universe of films is the unique way it portrays characters from fairy tales and nursery rhymes. And in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, it continues to be the case. For example, it shows Goldilocks (Florence Pugh) and the Three Bears (Ray Winstone, Olivia Colman, and Samson Kayo) as a crime family who are hunting Puss down. Meanwhile, Little Jack Horner (John Mulaney) isn’t so little anymore. And he’s shown be more of a gangster who wants the wishing star for himself. While the characters are fun and well played, it’s the story that really catches your attention. In this case the over all theme is about living in the moment, and not being afraid to face the future.

Perhaps the most impressive things about the film is that while there are tons of characters who share the screen, they never seem to overcrowd the film. They each get their share of screen time, which allows them to grow and show their motivations. There are several touching scenes because of this. Of course, this is a movie following the exploits of a famous bandit. So there are several action packed scenes that are beautifully shown thanks to excellent animation.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a fun film to watch, no matter your age. It’s the perfect film to watch together as a family. It’s also perfect if you are looking for something to make you smile just a little bit more this holiday season.

While Roderick has only been writing movie reviews for a relatively short time, he's been a fan of film for as long as he can remember. It's a love affair that started when he saw Star Wars at a drive-in theatre in Kitchener when he was four years old. In the past decade he's fulfilled his dream of interviewing celebrities, attending red carpets events at festivals such as TIFF and writing reviews for outlets such as Realstylenetwork.com. He's always on the hunt for the next big thing to hit the screen.
