TIFF Kids 2015: ‘Rainbow’

The latest installment of the TIFF Kids International Film Festival has kicked off in style and is now running from April 7th all the way through the 19th at the TIFF Bell Lightbox here in downtown Toronto.

With selections for the younger set spanning the entire globe, we’ll be checking in here at In The Seats with some periodic recommendations for screenings coming up in the festival.

There’s nothing wrong with a little bit of heartwarming no matter what age you might be, Rainbow is a lovely road trip movie where two orphaned kids try to make their dreams come true.

Both Pari and Chotu are orphaned siblings who are now living with their aunt and uncle who on a good day aren’t exactly anybody’s first choice to be a guardian.  Pari, the eldest takes care of her little brother Chotu assuming every single role he requires as he lost his site by the age of four and the only thing that they every disagree on are their favorite film stars.  When Pari spots a poster of one of their favorite movie stars, promoting eye donation, she thinks that she has found away to get Chotu his sight back and they set off on a remarkable journey of hope when they hear that his shooting scenes for his next movie in a nearby village.

An ultimately light and warm hearted affair, Rainbow hits many of the beats of an 80’s kid centric adventure movie.  It all feels so warm and inviting as we get into this story that we can’t help but have a smile on our faces.  The action moves at a crisp pace and we can’t help but fall for these two adorable kids who command the screen with an unparallel ease from beginning to end.  Director Nagesh Kukunoor crafts a delightful yarn at an easy going pace that never feels like it isn’t trying to be anything but completely and adorably universal to kids of all ages.

Rainbow is simply a delight for any age, go see it.

Rainbow is playing today at 12:15 PM, Sunday April 12th at 1PM, Wed Apr 15th at 9:45AM & Saturday April 18th at 3:15PM with the director in attendance.
