Fantasia 2017: Our Review of ‘Boyka: Undisputed’

Just because you haven’t seen the first three chapters of a franchise, certainly doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the fourth one.

In this fourth installment, Boyka is now a free man and is looking for his shot at the big time as a legit pro fighter.  However things change when an accidental death in the ring sends Boyka on a downward spiral questioning his entire value system and risking everything by going back into Russia to try and make amends for the unintentional suffering that he has caused.

I’ll be the first to admit that when a movie like this put these overly dramatic and real world issues forward, I get a little scared, but don’t be.  Boyka: Undisputed is still a fun and fairly ridiculous action franchise with plenty of bone crunching over the top action.

Director Todor Chapkanov has a healthy background as a second unit director in a myriad of budget action films so it makes sense to see him move to the center chair without too much grief.  He knows how to stage action and keeps it all going at a pace that is near gonzo, but that is the ultimate appeal of a movie like this.  It sure as hell isn’t high art, it never tries to be because really it’s just a bunch of sweaty weirdoes kicking each other’s assess…and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Scott Adkins carries the role of Boyka easily enough as a man who only knows violence in his life who is looking for a little redemption.  He doesn’t have to stretch it too far, but we believe in him when we need to.

Boyka: Undisputed is exactly what you think it is and more; wall to wall asskicking that actually allows for a little bit of heart.

Boyka: Undisputed hits VOD in September.
